  The Dalton Initiative

Dalton' Story

Dalton was enjoying the day with friends and his fiance, floating the Huzzah Creek, as many do. The day turned drastically when he walked into the water to grab a raft, he slipped under the water and never resurfaced.

His death reveals something most people don't know: open water can turn deadly, even when it looks safe. Currents, drop-offs, and underwater obstacles are not visible from the surface.

Stay Safe on the Water: The Crucial Role of a Properly Fitted Life Vest

Creeks, Rivers, Lakes, and Oceans have DARK bottoms, making visibility much different than a pool. Combine that with unknowns like branches and currents, even STRONG SWIMMERS can be pulled under.

Let them be mad at you!

Life vests might feel uncool to some kids, but they're a crucial safety measure in open water. Even confident swimmers can encounter unexpected situations, and wearing a life vest make all the difference. It's better to be safe and enjoy water activities without worry. So, let's prioritize safety and always wear a life vest!

Open Water Safety

We are currently partnering with Missouri State Parks to reduce drownings in the Meramec River, one of our region's highest-risk locations.

We also aim to collaborate with Big River and Lake of the Ozarks, two areas where drowning rates are alarmingly high.
